When migrant learners of English arrive in Australia, they find that how they used to do things may not work here. Highly contextualised Australian practices present a difficult challenge when trying to figure out how to find a job. This article is about a project at Swinburne University of Technology that turned the stories of successful past students into digital resources to inspire current students to take a more considered and informed look into career options. For every story in the project, a focus was identified to communicate a central idea and to activate a change in how the students perceive the Australian employment landscape. The project identified five foci: (1) confidence; (2) time; (3) explicit demonstration of how things are done; (4) volunteering as a pathway to employment and settlement; and (5) support for further studies.
